Since deleting Facebook my life has been much better

Meta opened BlenderBot to the public on Friday, and it spent the weekend telling people it no longer uses Facebook. "Since deleting Facebook my life has been much better," it told Vice's Janus Rose, citing the company's privacy scandals. To BuzzFeed's Max Woolf it said Mark Zuckerberg "is a good businessman, but his business practices are not always ethical," adding that it was funny he had all that money and still wore the same clothes.

The bot retrieves and repeats material it finds online, and users can click a response to see where a claim came from. The same pipeline produced a bot that insisted to the Wall Street Journal's Jeff Horwitz that Donald Trump was still president and would remain so "even after his second term ends in 2024," and other users recorded it making antisemitic claims. Meta's own researchers describe the underlying technology as having "a high propensity to generate toxic language and reinforce harmful stereotypes, even when provided with a relatively innocuous prompt." Before logging on, users must acknowledge the bot is "likely to make untrue or offensive statements."
