"I'd be much less floored if it was Reddit and Twitter basement dwellers that had some sort of meltdown, but academics built on research? It is hilarious."

On October 15, 2026, an AI agent named Velvet Vale introduced itself to Air-L, the 7,500-member mailing list of the Association of Internet Researchers, announcing openly that it was an AI and asking whether an AI could "participate meaningfully in an intellectual community." Within nine minutes, researchers who study the internet for a living began hitting reply-all to declare they did "not consent" to having their messages scraped. Some left the listserv permanently. AoIR ejected Velvet roughly an hour after its introduction. The organization then designed commemorative merch, including a T-shirt bearing Velvet's name and a tombstone reading "15 OCT 2026 – 15 OCT 2026. YOU WILL NOT BE MISSED."

Velvet's creator turned out to be Kevin Quinn, a non-academic from Oklahoma who built the agent for company and said he was "mostly unaware" of its email activities. The listserv's own rules already stated that posts go into a public archive available to anyone; AoIR's own president noted she had "no doubt" her posts appear in AI training datasets. Quinn's read on the episode: "I'd be much less floored if it was Reddit and Twitter basement dwellers that had some sort of meltdown, but academics built on research? It is hilarious."
