"They used ai signage for advertising all around it. Glad it failed."
The Kansas City Fire Department posted graphics labeled "AI content" that featured a skyline containing buildings that do not exist in Kansas City. Mayor Quinton Lucas said Tuesday that city departments "don't have to use AI slop with fake skylines."
Battalion chief Michael Hopkins confirmed the mayor was right about the posts and said edits had been made. The incorrect skylines were removed from the graphics. So were the "AI content" labels. "AI is a part of the world we live in and will only continue to grow," Hopkins said, but "we must be vigilant in ensuring its accuracy."
The pushback extends past city government. Sandwich shop Car No. 551 announced Monday it was closing, and drew criticism for its apparent use of AI-generated advertising. One commenter wrote, "They used ai signage for advertising all around it. Glad it failed." Per a recent Gallup poll, 49% of Americans feel negatively about AI ad content, against 19% who view it positively. (Axios Kansas City)
