"These people are clearly not cooking their own recipes. They're putting out sometimes dozens of recipes a day. It's an automated publishing pipeline. It's all a lie."
A new report from ad-tracking startup Decrypt Ads identified more than 2,100 domains that appear to be AI-generated recipe farms, monetized through Russian and Chinese adtech partners and promoted aggressively on Pinterest, Facebook, and X. The sites pose as blogs run by real home cooks and chefs, complete with fabricated backstories — Michelin star credentials, heartwarming origin stories — and AI-generated author photos. Researcher Zach Edwards found that many of the domains share technical fingerprints, suggesting a small number of operators are running large chunks of the network.
The standout offender is AddCakes, a baking site whose fictional proprietor "Elena" — a busy mom reconnecting with her roots through cake — is visibly an AI-manipulated version of actress Emily Blunt. The site has published images of Elena cooking in a kitchen and sitting with her AI-generated family. Location data from X places the operator in Morocco. Beyond the identity theft, Edwards flags a concrete risk: visitors who don't block ads may be sending browsing data to authoritarian governments. "It's all a lie," Edwards said of the broader ecosystem, noting that the sites likely publish dozens of recipes a day through automated pipelines, none of which have probably been cooked by anyone involved.
