ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity Served Up Wrong Election Information, Study Finds

A study found that ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity all produced incorrect information about elections — including wrong details about voting procedures, candidate eligibility, and polling locations. The errors weren't random noise: researchers identified systematic patterns in how the models failed, with each system making confident, fluent mistakes that users would have little reason to question.

The findings arrived during an election cycle when millions of people were turning to AI chatbots as a first stop for civic information, rather than official government sources. The study did not find that any of the three systems was reliably accurate.
