Google Ties K-12 Search Access to AI Opt-In, Drawing Antitrust Criticism

Google is using its search monopoly to coerce schools into adopting AI. This highlights the danger of allowing an unregulated monopolist to control an essential service.

Google announced that K-12 students on school accounts will lose access to Google Search if their school administrators opt out of the company's AI tools, including Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Gemini in Classroom. The policy reverses Google's August decision to default Gemini on for many K-12 students — a move that itself drew an outcry, since the company had previously restricted Gemini to users 18 and older. Now, schools that want Search must accept the AI package; there is no middle option.

Former FTC chair Lina Khan called the arrangement coercion: "Google is using its search monopoly to coerce schools into adopting AI." Google controls the dominant share of U.S. education technology, with 150 million students and teachers on Google Classroom worldwide, many of them on school-issued Chromebooks. New York City and Los Angeles have already issued temporary bans on generative AI tools in elementary and middle schools. Josh Golin of children's advocacy group Fairplay responded by urging schools to drop not just the AI tools but Google entirely.
